A couple of really old sisters came to “the Caverns”

This photo was taken in Carlsbad in 2008.  This former Milwaukee Road covered hopper was sporting a scheme probably applied in 1970.  The color was “Federal Yellow” which was, at one time, as bright as a school bus.  Here we are 38 years later, and it is looking a bit haggard.  Somehow, even though it is now “NAHX 53433,” I still love something about this car.  By the way, the Milwaukee Road ceased to exist in 1985 when it was purchased by the Soo Line Railroad.  You can still see a few cars lettered for the Milwaukee Road on the rails even today.  In 2008, this one and “her sister” rolled through Roswell on the way to the Cavern City.
